What does a nanny do?

Have questions about what you should expect of your nanny? Below are common job duties of a nanny and completely reasonable expectations, as long as they are communicated in advance.

  • Nannies provide basic childcare; bathing, dressing, feeding, and maintaining a safe & stimulating environment!

  • Being there for your children; emotionally, physically and mentally!

  • Providing a positive example for your children to follow.

  • Reinforcing and supporting the values the family holds and (as long as the family is comfortable) introducing and teaching the family about their culture or experiences.

  • Encouraging developmentally appropriate activities for your children’s ages.

  • Preparing and planning activities for the children.

  • Maintaining the daily schedule of the children.

  • Working as a team with the parents and providing support and knowledge where it is needed.

  • Performing light housework; children’s laundry, tidying up after meals and activities or playtime, sweeping areas that may have gotten messy throughout the day from the children, wiping down high chairs, sanitizing toys, etc. Anything beyond needs to be discussed and agreed upon with the nanny.

  • Transporting children to various activities, school or playdates; making sure they are properly secured in carseats!

  • Care for mildly sick children; this may be at the discretion of the nanny. Typically caring for children with colds or fever is standard. Make sure to discuss what illnesses the nanny is comfortable with prior to her employment. Have a backup plan in place for these occasions.

  • Updating the parents throughout the day, maintaining a log; especially if caring for infants, and communicating effectively any concerns or highlights from the day.

What does a household manager + nanny do?

Does your family need more support beyond childcare? A household manager/nanny combo manages the details of the home as well. Below are common duties of a household manager and reasonable expectations. Properly communicating your needs prior to employment and ensuring it is a regular discussion will support a positive relationship with your household manager/nanny.
